Horseshoe Lake - July 2003
We always have one evening during the summer term at a local activity centre. We had two teams competing in the Raft Building activity. Team One were using a new design concept of two nested A frames as the base for the barrels.
Team Two were using the usual rectangular frame for their raft. This has been tried and tested and has proved to have some good design features. Once you have lashed the base together you need to attach the flotation devices which in our case were big plastic drums. Note we are wearing our canoe helmets even at this stage.
At this point you hope you've got your clove hitches and lashings tied correctly because the time was up for construction.

![]() Of course the real test comes when you put your raft into the water! The A frame design looks promising. ![]() However the traditional design suffered an initial setback as one of the barrels came loose. ![]() The teething problems turned into a major disaster as the raft became unstable and the remainder of the barrel floated free! ![]() The new design proved a great success and Team One rounded the marker buoy and headed back for home. This was a major victory for the young Scouts over their more experienced opponents. |
