For the final camp of 2003 we decided to have a Family Camp at a a site near Mytchett.

We gave each family a Project to complete on Saturday afternoon. There were four Fathers and six boys and we ran four different projects.
  • Team One consisted of two Dads and two boys and their task was to construct an Aerial Runway.
  • Team Two had to construct a self supporting flap-pole.
  • Team Three had to construct a compass course for the other teams to walk.
  • Team Four had to try out "Hay Box Cooking" using modern materials.
Six broom handles, a flag, a pulley and enough string to sink small battleship is all that is required to construct
'THE WIGAN SELF-SUPPORTING FLAGSTAFF'.

At this point you hope you've got your clove hitches and lashings tied correctly because the time was up for construction.

And what a great job it turned out to be!

One of the projects was to constuct a comapass course for the rest of the teams to complete.

We paced out a four-leg course which ended with a choice of three tent pegs.

Only one peg marked The correct finishing point of the course was marked by a single peg and the teams had to work out which it was.

Accurate compass work made this easier.

With plenty of space to work with we decided to construct "The Mother of all Aerial Runways"

One of the Dads was a Forester by profession so we had 'an expert' on the job!

Everybody joined in to hammer in the 3-2-1's and the stop line pegs.

The final task was to try out the theory of a hay box but using modern materials.

We decided to make the "Hay Box" out of a plastic dustbin and to use rolled up newspaper and poystyrene chips for the insulation.

The meat, vegetables and gravy were brought to heat on a gas stove for about ten minutes and then sealed in the dustbin.
After 4 hours we tested the results and IT WORKED! The meal was cooked and still fairly warm.
