Each year over the winter term the YHA runs a special discount weekend for Scouts. From experience the hostels on the list they tend to be the hostel that are infrequently used over this period. However for Scout that means they're usually near some fine walking country. A couple of years ago we did The Ridgeway from Wantage Youth Hostel and this year we decided to tackle the North Downs Way from Kemsing.
We arrived on Friday and after supper gave them the description of a planned walk and the appropriate O.S. map. Their task was to translate " . . .walk down Church Lane onto the footpath and turn left . . ." into map references and bearings.

Fast forward to Saturday morning and after breakfast the groups set out. Kemsing is almost directly on the North Downs Way and from any direction you are immediately in open country.

The older boys were on an 11-mile hike while the younger ones only had 6 miles to travel however they were ecstatic at finding 'the lane of the 49 squashed frogs'
We had one of the best weekends for weather this year and were walking in t-shirts on Saturday. The evenings were cold but we were allowed to have a campfire, which rounded off a great day for all.
