Belchamps is the Essex Scout campsite at Hawkwell which is near Southend-on-Sea.

We used it for our Summer Camp in 2005 and were invited to their 2006 Winter Camp.  Belchamps is 70 years old this year.  The first camp was held here at Easter 1936.

Scouts still use a hand-axe in their badge work and at camp.  The correct and safe use of a hand-axe forms part of the Outdoor Plus Award and the Survival Skills Activity Badge.

We arrived on Friday night and set up camp.  It was VERY cold overnight and all the tents were covered in thick frost.

The first job of the morning was to get the fire going so we could cook breakfast.

After breakfast the Scouts went off to join in the activities and Skip tied up the camp!

One of the activities was Backwoods Cooking where we saw how to prepare pigeon, rabbit and squirrel.

Yes it is dead!

We took part in the Go-Kart Time Trials

And the Assault Course.  The timed competition involved carrying a wheelbarrow over the course.

We also took part in the Team Building Competition

And we came FIRST!

The final event of the weekend was the Sedan Chair Race.

We had a great weekend and are looking forward to our next camp at Slimbridge.
