Hike October 2006
|
At the start of the half-term we decided to go for a cycle-hike along the Basingstoke Canal. The event will go towards our Cyclist Activity Badge. The event was organised by one of our Senior Patrol Leaders as part of his Gold Chief Scout Award. We started from the Barley Mow car park at Winchfield Hurst and cycled west towards Odiham.
We stopped along the way for a rest and some refreshments.
We went to the end of the Basingstoke Canal and visited the Greywell Tunnel. It has one of the largest colonies of breeding bats in the United Kingdom.
Then we returned to King John's Castle near Odiham where we had lunch. Odiham Castle, to give it its correct name, was built in the 13th Century and had an octagonal tower keep. It was from this castle that King John rode to Runnymede to sign the Magna Carta in 1215.

After lunch we invested one of our Scouts.
We decided to have a change from doing it in the Scout hut and so we took a flag and flagpole to complete the ceremony at the castle.
Then we had a wide game called Flag Raid where the leaders joined it and we finished with a three lap race around the castle.
It was a great day out and we got back to the car park around 4pm to meet our parents.
